Description

The Gruta de La Paz is a Marian sanctuary built inside the natural opening formed by the Apaquí River, which emerges after making its way into the mountain through this great tunnel of rock. The story goes that the sanctuary was started around 1819 by the Mercedarian priest A. Valdospinos, who, taking advantage of the beauty of the place, established the first cult to the Virgin of Mercy. From then on, the chapel began to be built little by little, until more than a century later it was finished as we can see it today, as a large cavern inside which is the chapel with the venerated image of Our Lady of Peace.
