Usually, a single day will be used to climb the Casahuala summit from Ambato or Riobamba; from Quito it can be done in a day when leaving at dawn; more suitable in two days.
The hike follows a long edge of moorland with vegetable pads, painted in some sections with rocks and Polylepis forests.
The first visible summit is the Summit 1, a very steep peak that offers no easy route. If you fancy adventure, get ready for a climb from IV to VI on good rock, though plenty of moss and not too many anchor points. This summit offers a diversity of climbing possibilities for the most expert.
For ordinary mortals, it will be better to point themselves to the Highest Summit, very attractive and higher in altitude.
The trail is visible in some sections and inconspicuous or lost among the green mats in others. Take into account for the return, as it is very common to have dense fog in the afternoon (and in the morning).
The highest summit also offers many opportunities for sport climbing on good rock. To reach this summit it is necessary to follow the route marked on the map. The last 2 meters are a climb of a V grade. It is advisable to take a 6 meter thin rope to improvise a handrail.
There is no such thing as a normal route to the peak 1, rarely climbed to the taste of each diner.
