Description

Santo Domingo Lagoon is a small lagoon located on the Cotopaxi Volcano eastern region, a very attractive place to ride a bike and take photos on clear days. It also offers some interesting hiking possibilities, such as the hike to the Cotopaxi eastern glaciers, where you will have to test your orientation skills since there is no marked trail or signage. If you are lucky enough to have a clear day, you can also admire the Quilindaña rock pyramid and the spectacular views of the Cotopaxi eastern region super-broken glaciers.

    How to get

Eastern Cordillera; 47 kilometers in a straight line southeast of Quito, 27.4km southeast of Machachi.

    1. “Control Norte” Normal Approach: You can ask for the way to the Cotopaxi National Park North Control at the Machachi central plaza. The first section is paved and later ballasted. It's necessary to register the entry at the northern control, ask for the road to “Laguna de Santo Domingo”, which is precisely the path that heads to the left as soon as you have passed the entrance control. This route may be more appropriate for 4x4 or high-wheel drive vehicles. Continue for about 20 kilometers until you find the sign indicating the detour to the Santo Domingo Lagoon. Continue along this detour for an additional 700 meters to the edge of the lagoon.
